Experienced doctors and nurses. The most advanced high-tech equipment. A success rate well above the national average. These are the reasons that make the Washington Hospital Center's transplantation program one of the busiest in the United States. In fact, we have performed 141 of the life extending and enhancing kidney transplants since January 2001, the 16th time in 17 years that more than 100 such procedures was either reached or eclipsed. Of that total, 89 of the organs came from living donors.
This is also one of the few programs that performs simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants, a procedure that actually cures certain types of diabetes. The Hospital Center has enjoyed a steady increase in patient volume over the past few years with survival rates consistently above the national average for the transplantation programs. Referrals to the Hospital Center transplantation programs come from nephrologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, internists, general and family practitioners and other physicians in the Washington metropolitan and surrounding areas.
